Bailey Troia is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Richmond. Bailey’s teaching broadly focuses on inequalities related to gender, sexuality, class, and race, and she has taught courses like Sociology of Gender, Sociology of Sexuality, Social Theory, Social Class & Inequality, and Introduction to Sociology. Dr. Troia’s research focuses on LGBTQ experiences of belonging and exclusion, primarily in the U.S. South and Midwest. Troia analyzes how queer and trans folks increasingly navigate ambivalent experiences of acceptance and belonging in a range of contexts, including local community and family.
Bailey holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in sociology from the University of Virginia, where they taught in the Sociology and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies departments. Prior to her time at UVA, Bailey studied sociology and psychology at Randolph-Macon College.
